Central Regional Jail Release Paths

Central Regional Jail and Correctional Facility is a regional jail operated by the West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation, or WVDCR. It serves Lewis County even though the building is in Braxton County. That distinction controls the release path. The Lewis County Sheriff may make the arrest and transport the person. The Lewis County Magistrate or Circuit Court supplies the bond, dismissal, sentencing, or other legal authority. WVDCR records the physical custody transaction at Central Regional Jail.

A departure can have several meanings. The person may leave on bond, finish a jail term, receive credit for time served, enter probation, transfer to a WVDCR prison, move to another regional jail, or pass to an agency with a valid hold. Parole generally concerns release from a prison sentence, not a routine pretrial bond release from the regional jail. A transfer ends custody at Central Regional but does not mean the person entered the community.

The most useful release record identifies the person, the date and time of departure if disclosed, the kind of release, and the receiving destination or authority when one exists. A court docket can explain why WVDCR was allowed to release or transfer the person, but it may not show when facility staff completed processing. Confirm Central Regional Jail Release

The official WVDCR Offender Search gateway separates Daily Incarcerations, jail offenders, and prison offenders. Use the jail search for a person held at Central Regional Jail. Daily Incarcerations is an admissions or current-custody view, not a completed-release list. The prison search answers a different question and is appropriate only after a state-prison commitment or transfer.

1. Search the WVDCR jail option with the person's exact name. Compare any displayed date of birth or offender number before accepting a match.
2. Check West Virginia VINE for the same person and note the precise custody label or alert event. All ten state regional jails feed VINE.
3. Review the Magistrate Case Record Search guidance or the circuit record for the Lewis County case. Look for bond, dismissal, sentence, time-served credit, or transfer entries.
4. Call Central Regional Jail if the official tools conflict or a recent change may still be processing. Ask which office handles a release-record request.
5. Request the relevant WVDCR record when an exact release time, release type, or destination must be documented.

Write down the source, exact wording, and access date. Do not turn a blank result into a conclusion. WVDCR warns that its offender information may not reflect a person's true current location, release date, or status. VINE is valuable for custody-change alerts, yet the originating DCR record and controlling court entry remain the firmer evidence.

Central Regional Jail Records Contact

Use the stable facility contact instead of addressing a request to a named superintendent, since personnel can change. The official Central Regional Jail facility page is the source for the jail's location and main number. No public records-unit hours, release-processing hours, booking-photo fee, or release-record fee was verified. Call before visiting or mailing sensitive identifying information.

West Virginia's Freedom of Information Act provides the public-record request framework. A focused request should give the full name, date of birth if known, approximate custody dates, Lewis County case number, and the exact document sought. Ask for the booking and release entry, release type, transfer destination, or booking photograph instead of requesting an undefined complete file. WVDCR policy identifies the Commissioner as the public-record custodian, while the facility can route the caller to the current receiving office.

Lewis County's Regional Jail

Lewis County has no separately verified county-operated adult jail. Ordinary adult jail commitments from Lewis County are handled through the statewide regional system, with Central Regional Jail as the primary serving facility. The jail also serves Braxton, Calhoun, Clay, Gilmer, Nicholas, Roane, and Webster counties. Searching only for a building inside Lewis County can therefore send a family to the wrong office.

The regional model divides responsibility. The sheriff handles local law-enforcement work, the court controls the case, and WVDCR operates the jail. People held there may be pretrial detainees who have no fixed release date, people serving shorter jail terms, or people waiting for another custody step. A sentenced person committed to state prison may remain temporarily at a regional jail or transfer elsewhere in WVDCR. Central Regional Jail's Prototype History

Central Regional Jail formally opened on February 22, 1993. WVDCR describes it as the prototype for the podular design later used across West Virginia's regional jails. This history is not just local color. It helps explain why the facility serves a multi-county area and why Lewis County custody data appears in a state system rather than on a county sheriff roster.

The jail sits at Dyer Hill near Sutton and Flatwoods in Braxton County. Official directions use Interstate 79 and Exit 67, then lead uphill past the Days Inn. Those directions describe how to reach the site for approved facility business. They do not identify a release door, family waiting point, pickup shuttle, or release schedule. None of those operational details was verified.

Anyone planning a trip from Weston should first confirm the person's status with WVDCR or VINE and call the facility. Court action can occur before jail processing is complete. The absence of a published schedule means no hour should be promised, even when a bond entry or release order appears in the case record.

Three Central Release Record Custodians

A Lewis County release often leaves a trail with three agencies. The Lewis County Sheriff may hold the arrest report and transport information. The Magistrate or Circuit Clerk holds the docket and the order that supplies legal authority. WVDCR maintains the booking, custody, movement, and release transaction for Central Regional Jail. No single record should be forced to answer all three roles.

For a bond case, start with the magistrate record. The online search may show bond type, amount, posting date, and status after a person drops from the active jail search. A bond amount alone does not prove payment, and a posting entry does not prove WVDCR finished processing. Central Releases to ICE Custody

A detainer can change the meaning of release from Central Regional Jail. If another county, state, federal agency, or immigration authority is entitled to receive the person, WVDCR may end its own custody by transferring the person. That is not community release. The DCR transaction should be read together with the receiving agency's status.

For immigration custody, use the official ICE Online Detainee Locator System. ICE says that locator covers current detention and releases from ICE custody within the prior 60 days. Search with the nine-digit A-Number and country of birth, or use exact name, date of birth, and country of birth. Exact-match rules, intake delay, age limits, and security exclusions make a negative result inconclusive.

Confirm both sides of the move. The WVDCR release record documents that Central Regional custody ended, while ICE or another receiving jurisdiction documents what began next. If the locator does not return the person, contact the proper ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations field office rather than stating that the person entered the community.

These services can route a newly released person or family toward current assistance, but they cannot verify custody status or change a release decision.
